Heaven's Vault is the most unique game I've ever had the pleasure of playing, and the core gameplay loop (Fly to a new place, find some artefacts, translate some artefacts, talk to people, repeat) remains entertaining even on my fourth playthrough. If you enjoy languages and figuring out how they work, then you're probably bound to enjoy this game as well. And even if you don't enjoy languages and figuring out how they work, you'll probably do after playing this game.. Heaven's Vault is an interesting and fairly unique game. It's all about exploring ancient ruins as an archeologist, looking for ancient artefacts and writing, and piecing together a dead language through the game as you try to make sense of the ancient history that permeates the science fantasy setting. The visuals are great, but the game is a bit of a slow burner. Often you will wish for a sprint button or a way to speed up the dialogue of "I think I got this word right / wrong", etc. It's also a pity you are somewhat on rails - you get to explore most locations only once, and if you don't find all the bits on that one go, you're out of luck until New Game Plus.If you have some 15 odd hours to spare though, it's an enjoyable experience you don't get much of from other games.. As a fan of interactive narrative fiction, I was curious to try the innovative gameplay described in the product page. What I wasn't prepared for was becoming obsessed with it! A modern mystery tied to the deep past, rather than the usual inventory-item-unlocks-narrative paradigm, Heaven's Vault only gives you the parts of the story that you, as an archaeologist, uncover or translate. The world building is deep and satisfying. The only negative I have to offer is that the ending felt just a little weak after 25 hours of gameplay building to it, but I will say that the ending felt very natural as opposed to a contrived doomsday scenario with multiple explosions. That said, I think the game is a true innovative standout. Inkle has just gone on my "must watch" list of studios.. 10/10 They sell baguettes on EdborethAnd the game is really interesting, making you analyse a language.. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a game so much that I couldn't let it go before I finished it. And it's extremely rare that I ever feel like playing an adventure game again straight after finishing it. I love everything about it.... well, maybe except for some technical minor navigation bugs.... but everything else!. An unusual beast – really clever, engaging, and interesting, with some really strange rough edges. It's an astonishing achievement in narrative construction, and in some ways that works to its detriment – the ways in which the environment, and your character's understanding of the environment, are affected by your actions is seamless enough that it can be hard to see what changed (until subsequent playthroughs). Pros:– The setting really is deeply engrossing, and the world-building is top-notch – quietly and un-self-congratulatorily makes 'diverse' choices, and starts to feel very real. – The translation mechanic is really well-done and genuinely very fun. – Much more replayable than it seems on a first playthrough – a lot of depth really unlocks, and none of the depth and variance in the narrative is at all disappointing.– Some reviews have complained about the fixed (or semi-fixed) personality of the main character, but she's interesting and it feels very consistent and coherent.– Nice devs! Very responsive to community feedback, a lot of broken things have been fixed. Cons:– I think a little bit of 'irrelevant' detail and discovery was lost for the sake of the narrative complexity. It's easy to feel that each individual location was too shallow – the overall universe of the game is so carefully-crafted, and I don't think this 'needed' to be an open-world game, but the world can feel very gated off, and individual portions of the experience very tightly-structured. – The ending is oddly underwhelming. This feels deliberate on the part of the devs, and I get the narrative point being made, but the lack of a real moment of understanding is unsatisfying.– Save system is annoying – it's too easy to misclick and ruin a playthrough. I'd overall unreservedly recommend the game, though – the truly novel and innovative aspects feel very much worth tolerating the less brilliant side.. I don't often write reviews, so when I do you better believe me a game is worth your time. This is a very careful recommendation. The game is very unique and does many things right, but it comes with its share of issues, most stemming from its open-world trappings and design. At times it can be excellent and like nothing else on the market, but those moments are few and far between, drowned in rather tedious exploration and many small control and camera issues. When it works, it's great, but sadly it mostly doesn't work. That said, I am all for supporting developers who take these sorts of creative risks, and the positives outweigh the negatives, if slightly.. As someone who occupies most of their time with studying ancient history, loves Ancient Egypt, and is also a language enthusiast who studied linguistics as well, this game was simply perfect for me. If you are even remotely interested in linguistics, history and archaeology, as well as liking adventure/exploration games with a heavy focus on the narrative and making choices, then this will be a great experience for you. I am calling it an experience more than a game, because for me it had less to do with playing any game mechanics and more with getting immersed in the world, the characters and its lore.Basically Heaven's Vault invites you to grab a cup of coffee, put on your archaeology hat and then become part of a beautifully crafted setting that heavily draws from the Ancient cultures of our Earth, mostly the natives/indigenous and of course Egyptian/African ancient history and culture.Highly recommended for those people like me who are a bit tired of all the violent, drama heavy/focused entertainment out there and want to engage with more profound and beautiful ideas. Thank you, dev team, for creating this work of art. There's no changes to the Heat Signature code itself, so everyone else won't see any changes from this update. If this does fix your problem, or if it still doesn't work, please fill out our bug report form again and let us know: Bug Report Form[docs.google.com]Thanks!. The Space Birthday Update: Player Story Trading Cards: This post is about a feature of the free Space Birthday Update, out now! See this post for the details. One Space Year ago, we said we'd do something different with our trading cards. We didn't want them to be about the game's story, we wanted them to be about player stories. But we needed you to play a bit first, and show us what you got up to. And then it also took a really long time to make them. But now, on its first Space Birthday, we celebrate eight players and their moments of brilliance, stupidity and panic. They supplied us with clips of their antics, linked below, I wrote up their story as part of the game's lore, and John Roberts recreated their characters and situations to produce these lovely glamour shots of their moments of glory and/or shame. The cards themselves will go live when the update launches on the 27th.Thank you so much to all our players, for playing our strange game in smarter, wilder and funnier ways than we ever predicted.August 'Glitch Thief' Dust. Translation update!: A new build of Heaven's Vault is now live! This update brings a small but powerful new feature that we'd love your feedback on: building up words from smaller words. With the update, Aliya can now "guess" a new word if it's made from two words she already knows or has guesses for. So no more getting stuck with words you can read and she can't...There's also the usual round of minor story fixes and tweaks. Meanwhile, here's veteran game design and interactive narrative specialist Zarf describing Heaven's Vault unique approach to building a story[blog.zarfhome.com] around your actions entirely on the fly. Enjoy!
